La monja blanca is the national flower of Guatemala. A photo of this flower hangs above the desk at which I work. La monja blanca is a white orchid with a praying nun at the center of its blossom.
The national bird of Guatemala is the endangered Quetzal, after which my city is named. However the locals refer to Quetzaltenango as Xela (short for Xelajunojh, a word in the local Mayan language, Quiche).
I am living in Xela for the large majority of the next ten months. I will return home on December 11th for a short reprieve from Spanish speaking and daily volunteer work, afterwhich I will fly back to Xela and spend another six or seven months at the foot of the Santa Maria volcano, studying and working.
